Narrative
CRANSTON, RI – A 84-year-old man died last month in a wrong-way collision caused by a reckless teen driver in south-central Providence County.
The incident occurred the night of Sunday, May 18th, along Pippin Orchard Road on the far western outskirts of Cranston.
Police say that a teen driver was travelling 74 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone when he lost control of his vehicle and veered onto the wrong side of the roadway. His vehicle collided head-on with a Mercedes carrying two people.
Medics transported both occupants of the Mercedes to the hospital. The passenger, identified as 84-year-old Jack Safford, died on Tuesday from injuries sustained in the accident.
Authorities arrested the 16-year-old driver on charges of driving to endanger resulting in death and driving to endanger resulting in physical injury.
The investigation is ongoing.
