JOHNSTON, RI – Medics transported five people to the hospital on Sunday, including a police trooper, after a two-vehicle crash in Johnston.
The accident happened around 9:20 p.m. on the eastbound side of Route 6, or the Denise J. Roberts Expressway, before the exit for Atwood Avenue. This is just north of StoneHill MarketPlace.
Police say that a vehicle rear-ended a Rhode Island State Police cruiser in the high-speed lane of Route 6 eastbound. The initial investigation indicates that the trooper may have been entering the highway to initiate a pursuit at the time of the accident.
Five people were hurt in the crash, though the severity of their injuries is unknown at this time. Authorities say that the police trooper has been discharged from the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.
